Success!

Ok, last Sketchup post for a while, I promise. I did manage to get basic compositing working in Sketchup though so this will let me do huge amounts of detail at low cost.

The following image was rendered in 4 parts with objects closer to the foreground being added with each composite. Also I can reuse objects like the Zeppellin which now appears twice in the image (which is not a huge savings in Sketchup I know but it's still fun). For the last bit of the composite I used section planes to cut away everything farther than 30 feet from the camera and then used the physics engine to help me throw some crates and tables around. I forgot to put them in the background too but it's all easy and possible.

I'm thinking of writing a tutorial based on this since there must be some people out there who would find this useful.

Afterwards I just ran it through the style engine again to make it look like an old photograph that I've been trying to restore. The only photoshopping (or Gimping if you're cheap like me) was to tweak the contrast a bit. Every single other thing was done with Sketchup.

I know I'm pretty much the only one I know who really cares about sketchup but I had to share my joy. Maybe other sketchup nerds will find this through the magic of google and we can talk about extruded segments and section planes until the cows come home.
